Responsible Growth for Northcross calls on Austin citizens to join our citywide boycott of Wal-Mart until it and/or Lincoln Property Company agrees to withdraw its proposed Supercenter from the Northcross redevelopment plan.

The proposed Wal-Mart Supercenter was approved by city staff without any public process or hearings. But a recent survey showed 85 percent of respondents OPPOSE a Wal-Mart Supercenter there. More than 3600 residents and business owners have now signed a petition against the project.

These organizations together represent more than 43,000 Austin households, indicating that RG4N’s concerns about good development and the importance of neighborhood involvement in planning are shared by Austinites across the city.

Why have so many people and organizations signed on? Simple. At its current size, the proposed Wal-Mart Supercenter will overwhelm street capacity, strain infrastructure, threaten existing businesses, exacerbate runoff pollution to nearby Shoal Creek and increase trash, noise, light pollution and crime in the area.

Responsible Growth for Northcross has an alternate vision for this site. We have publicly called upon Lincoln to consider a profitable, sustainable mixed-use development instead—but such a project isn’t possible with a massive supercenter dominating the site.

Join Our Boycott

If you agree that residents and business owners should have a fair voice in major projects that will affect their lives and livelihoods, join our boycott. Help us persuade Wal-Mart and Lincoln to abandon their plan for a Wal-Mart Supercenter at Northcross, and to develop a profitable, sustainable mixed-use development instead. Once they agree to do so, this boycott will end.

Why should people who don't live near Northcross join the boycott? Wal-Mart has all but saturated rural and suburban markets. Its new growth strategy is to locate its big box stores in city neighborhoods. Today that neighborhood happens to be ours, but tomorrow it may be yours.

I pledge not to shop at any Wal-Mart store in Austin until Wal-Mart and Lincoln Property Company agree not to build a Wal-Mart Supercenter at Northcross Mall. Developers should be respectful of neighborhood concerns and Wal-Mart should not locate where it isn't wanted, just as founder Sam Walton promised.
