The Center of Austin

There is a story in the Sunday Statesman about municipal offices moving out of downtown. It asks an interesting question:

Where is the center of Austin?

Geographically, it's just southeast of MoPac Boulevard (Loop 1) and West 35th Street.

Population-wise, it has moved over the years: Sixth Street and Congress Avenue at the close of World War II and then north and west in the past 50 years. Now, it's on top of Northcross Mall, says city demographer Ryan Robinson. But in the future and with development, he expects it to head east.

This just confirms what we all already knew: Northcross is the wrong place for suburban, highway sprawl. Northcross lies at the center of Austin, and should be redeveloped with an urban, mixed use design.

That will happen only if we win our lawsuit. So, please show your support today.
